We recommend using netting over and or under natural Mexican Palm Thatch & Tahitian Palm Thatch outdoors to increase their usable life.

Why use netting under Mexican Palm Thatch: To prevent thatch from sagging between slats of wood. If water pools or collects in a sagging area it will commonly wear out in the sagging area prematurely. We also believe without the sagging, less rain will get through the thatch, making it more waterproof.
Why use netting under Tahitian Palm Thatch: To prevent small wispy pieces of thatch hanging between purlins/slats of wood. Also to prevent thatch from sagging between slats of wood. If water pools or collects in a sagging area it will commonly wear out in the sagging area prematurely. We also believe without the sagging, less rain will get through the thatch, making it more waterproof. Tahitian thatch is much thicker & will have much less of a tendency to sag compared to Mexican Palm thatch.
Why use netting over Mexican & Tahitian Palm Thatch: To prevent thatch from coming off in the wind or rain. When thatch gets older, netting can really help keep detreated thatch from blowing off and ending up all over a yard or in a pool. If wind and rain can't remove the thatch from the roof, the life of the thatch should be greatly increased.

Netting Installation Info. Over thatch:

We recommend attaching the netting all around the perimeter of the roof frame. We try to secure the netting about every 4-6 inches when we do installations.
For over thatch installation, if you can't attach the netting every 4-6 inches we recommend weaving our Black Net Rope Boarder all around the boarder.
To preserve the beauty of a thatch roof, we don't recommend attaching netting under the eave overhang. However, if netting is installed on a temporary basis for a storm, this is a great idea.
How to attach netting: We use 1-inch-wide lath air staples but this may not be possible or recommended for every style thatch roof or roofing. Here are some alternatives.

Screw hooks, screws, nails, staples, wire, hog rings, fence staples, zip ties etc.

Stretch netting back into its squared form before installing (see video below.) For packing and shipping reasons all nets are stretched from opposite corners and rolled and tied. To put into their original shape, pull netting from the other opposite corners (see video below.)
To initially put netting over a small thatch roof we use 2 people on ladders holding 2 net corners in their hands. They pull the net tight between them over the edge of the roof. They then pull the other net corners on top of the thatch roof and pull the netting from these corners over the peak of the roof and down. If you just, try to pull net over the top with the first corners it will most likely get stuck on the lower edge of the roof.
After centering the netting and making sure the netting reaches where it needs to be attached, you may need to lift the netting to remove any thatch being pushed in the wrong direction.
